Gig 101: The Rhino Room

The final gig for my Adelaide Comedy run had me returning to The Rhino Room. The Monday night shows are known as OneMicStand and it reminds me of the original Wednesday nights that I used run when I was the promoter so long ago.  Basically they're a night for established comedians to try new material and also give new comedians an opportunity to work on establishing themselves. I was pretty exhausted by the time I reached Monday night.  I had a great week in Adelaide catching up with friends and performing some big, long gigs.  I also found time to be a guest on the following podcasts:  The PieCast, The Loose Five Podcast, two editions of the Graveyard AV Club, two interviews for Radio Adelaide, the Adelaide Comedy podcast and my 100th podcast for "Can You Take This Photo Please?"  To say that I was pretty exhausted by the time I hit the stage on Monday night would be an understatement.  I had fun on all of the podcasts, each show had a very distinct flavour (in the case of the PieCast that is an actual fact and not just a metaphor!) and it was great to touch base with the talent that is coming through the Adelaide comedy scene.

Last night there were three brackets so of course there were three distinct set lists:

Setlist One:

New to Comedy

Turning 40

Cue Burnt Down

Car Crash in Adelaide

Ripped Wolverine

Being An Arsehole

Adam Sandler: Royal Baby

Little Boy Joke

Setlist Two:

Tripping and Farting

Laughing in Greek Class

Laughing at a Funeral

Sargent Dick Long

Glitter in Invitations

People Wearing Your Glasses

Setlist Three:

"You're An Ugly Hooker!"

Felix and Twitter

"That Won't Get Him A Job"

No Need To Share All Your Opinions

International Bogan

A fun night and a pretty laid back end to my run in Adelaide.  I found I had a lot of fun watching the new comedians working on their sets and really saw some excellent emerging talent.  For the most part I attempted to keep the night light and breezy.  I even managed to perform a routine requested by my friend Beth who wanted me to perform the Spooning routine for her friends in the audience.  It has always been the closest I have to a favourite routine for people.  Well, as far as I can gather.  It is definitely the routine that is mentioned the most by punters.

There was a lot of ad libbing as well ranging from some pretty silly material about Wolverine and the routine within Tripping and Farting has revealed a section that really lends itself to some happy exploration of just how far I can push a situation in the jokes.  It is always fun to find a piece that allows you to ad lib to almost breaking point.

In the end it was a fun night but with an early start and so much work to do for my week of gigs back at The Comic's Lounge hosting for Tom Gleeson and prepping for the opening night of Season 7 of The Shelf next Monday (5th of August, tickets can be found here) it was time to beat a hasty retreat.  It was definitely a happy home coming and fingers crossed it won't be quite as long before I return again.
